Paimpol-Bréhat, an exceptional site dedicated to the testing and optimization of tidal turbine prototypes

The Paimpol-Bréhat tidal test site is the only scale 1 test site in France, dedicated to the testing of tidal turbines at sea. Thanks to the fact that it is a test site in real ocean conditions, and because of its currents, or its exposure to the swell, it is a unique site for any project developer.

This unique test-site benefits from 10 years of operating experience.

It’s a good site to qualify technologies and move from the concept to the industrial stage !

Raphaël Coquet – Project Director at HydroQuest

Technical datas:

In Paimpol-Bréhat, machines can be connected to the national grid and since the improvement of the submarine link carried out in mid-September 2022, the tidal demonstrators can even be connected to three-phase alternating current using a drymate connection. Thanks to these qualities, it’s easy to operate and at controlled cost.

Paimpol-Bréhat test site : open to the world

image1-271×300Paimpol-Brehat test site takes part of the Interreg TIGER France Manche England project. The UE TIGER project promote tidal stream energy as a maturing industry, capable of achieving an accelerated cost reduction pathway. Paimpol-Bréhat test site is also part of the Open-C Foundation the French major test sites network.

Brittany on your side

In Brittany, a whole network of know-how and proven skills will accompany you throughout your testing and research steps.

Need help to find suppliers in the field of tidal energy or for your tests? Bretagne Ocean Power provides you with a new directory of Breton companies that already supply projects in France and abroad!

178 companies are already by our side with experience in Marine Energies technologies in the area of studies, marines operations, ship building and repair with more than 260 contracts.

or meet 3 of them at ICOE-OEE:

Dynamocean : in charge of oceanographic campaign and characterization of energy resources. They rent as well oceanographic equipment.
Utilsea : they developed a solution for monitoring subsea structures allowing subsantial costs savings in inspections throughout their life. They also develop positioning solution, multi-constallation RTK reference stations and associated server and control software.
Sabella : specialized in design and manufacture of small and high power tidal turbines

The event is a great opportunity to already generate a first contact with them and to know more about their fields of action.

A region committed to tidal and wave power

The region of Brittany is full of other possibilities as well : there are additional test sites like Saint-Anne-du-Portzic in the bay of Brest or in the ria d’Etel, these sites are complementary and able to complete our commitment :

  •  – Saint-Anne-du-Portzic, easy to operate, used to test reduces-scale machines or applications for wind and wave energy
  • – Ria d’Etel, easy to operate and used to test reduces-scale machines or applications as well, but for tidal turbines.
