Pennavel to use BrestPort’s MRE terminal for float construction and/or assembly

Pennavel has announced its intention to use BrestPort’s marine renewable energy (MRE) terminal to build and/or assemble the floats for France’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind farm, to be located off the coast of Southern Brittany. The two companies signed an agreement, in line with the commitment by Pennavel – as winning bidder of the AO5 tender – to local content.

Leading on from discussions launched in late 2021 on the possibility of Pennavel operating from the MRE terminal in the port of Brest for the roll-out of its offshore wind farm project in Southern Brittany, an agreement in principle was signed on 8 September by BrestPort and the developer. Moving forward, the goal is to dive deeper into this collaboration and prepare the next steps towards defining the technical and commercial conditions to bring these plans to fruition.

The focus is on using the port of Brest’s MRE terminal in particular for the construction and/or assembly of floats for France’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind farm. These first steps towards industrial roll-out, which are particularly strategic, are set to take place between 2030 and 2031.

This choice by Pennavel confirms their commitment towards maximising local content and contributing to the development of the local wind sector. This commitment was initiated in 2021 when the developer signed the Charter of commitment to local content.

This project points to the strategic position BrestPort’s MRE terminal holds in the roll-out of offshore wind in Europe, particularly in the Celtic Sea. This role is further bolstered by the InFloW programme, a major long-term investment programme currently underway through which BrestPort is supporting offshore energy development by adapting its dedicated offshore renewable infrastructures to the specific requirements of floating wind. With this programme, project developers are guaranteed access to specially designed facilities!
