Optimal conditions for marine and offshore wind energies

Thanks to its strong ocean waves, currents, and winds, Bretagne is a region with a high potential for harnessing marine renewable energy. It also enjoys a strong skills base in the maritime industry, which is crucial for growing this emergent sector along with the new technology required.

Proof of these good conditions is the multitude of projects in development, testing or pilot phase around the Breton coast:

Focus on flagship projects

  • BOTTOM-FIXED OFFSHORE WIND FARM BAY OF SAINT-BRIEUC

62 x8mW wind turbines. Commissioning in May 2024

  • Capacity :496 MW of installed capacity and 1,820 GWh of annual production, the project aims to supply the equivalent of the consumption of 835,000 inhabitants (including heating).
  • Project developers: Ailes Marines (IBERDROLA)
  • Technology employed:
    • 62 wind turbine Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SG 8.0-167 DD, assembled in Le Havre and Brest (FR)
    • Jacket foundation (Navantia Windar) built in Brest (FR) and Fene (ES)

  • 750MW FLOATING WIND FARM in SOUTH BRITTANY

  • 250 MW awarded to PENNAVEL
  • 500 MW new tender in 2024
  • TIDAL TURBINE TEST SITE IN PAIMPOL BRÉHAT

OCEANIC TEST SITE FOR FULL-SCALE TURBINE

  • Capacity: up to 2 MW grid connection
  • Operated by: Open-C Foundation

  • FLOATING WIND & WAVE ENERGY TEST SITE IN SAINTE ANNE-DU-PORTZIC (BREST)

As well as its tanks for testing wind turbines, IFREMER enables companies such as Eolink to test the most innovative floating wind turbine prototypes at 1/10th scale.

EOLINK FLOATING WIND TESTED

  • Goal: Produce a new floating wind turbine on tripod (scale 1/10)
  • Project developers: Geps Techno, WEC and Eolink with the support of IFREMER and Regional Council of Bretagne
  • Technology: EOLINK design targets the biggest power/weight ratio in order to get the best-in-class LCOE. First time such ratio between swept area and floater’s size is tested.
  • Output power: 12 MW (Scale 1).

DIKWE PROJECT (PROTOTYPE) TESTED

  • Project developer: Legendre
  • Technology: It is based on a wave motor system with oscillating flaps.

SEATURNS TESTED

  • Project developer: Seaturns
  • Technology: Wave energy 1/4-scale prototype with innovative mooring.

  • TIDAL TURBINE TEST SITE IN ETEL RIA

Test site for small scale tidal turbines

  • Operated by: Chantier Bretagne Sud
  • Guinard Energies devices already tested
  • European project: ELEMENT with Nova Innovation
  • OFF-GRID ISLAND DEMONTRATOR

The island of Ouessant is a model of a 100% autonomous island using 100% renewable energy and includes the connection of a tidal turbine, a photovoltaic power plant and an electricity storage system. Smart grids regulate and manage consumption and production using an energy management system.

It is a genuine model of energy autonomy that is ready-to-market and can be replicated in other energy-isolated areas.
